Male with both basal cells largely infuscated. Face with con- siderable yellow in both sexes. The combination of a hyaline sec- ond basal cell, saturate crossband, and largely yellow face separates this spe- cies and its sibling species, C. calviis, from other dark Chrysops. It is separated from calvus by the characters in the key. Some specimens have a small spot at the bifurcation of the third longitu- dinal vein. The anal area of the wing is sometimes dilutely infuscated. " ^rtsb.
