Wild celery is sometimes con-founded with pipe wort {Eriocaulon),a fresh-water plant, and also withcertain stages of arrow-head. Thestaminate flowers of the wild celery,attached at the base of the plant,shed pollen which floats on the waterand fertilizes the pistillate flowers,which are attached to a long, slender,rounded stem. This stem assumes aspiral form, and by its contractiondraws the flower under water afterfertilization, where the seed pod isdeveloped. This seed pod and itsspiral stem distinguish this fro
