The mesh of the screenis of sufficient strength to prevent trouble from this sourcein the future. The practice of the Brooklyn Rapid TransitSystem is to sand one rail only. ARMATURE BAND-WIRE TENSION MACHINE A new band-wire tension machine of the Peerless typehas recently been placed on the market by the ElectricService Supplies Company to meet the demand for a light, portable device which can be used to advantage in connec-tion with an ordinary lathe and which will make lathebanding as efficient as any other method of rotating thearmature. It is applied to a lathe by removing the tool postand inserting a bolt which clamps the machine to the cross. Band-Wire Tension Machine slide. The armature which is to be banded is then mountedon the lathe centers and rotated at one of the low speedsavailable with the lathe. This device, with a lathe, provides a banding machine ofgreatest precision from the fact that the tension can beregulated from that proper for the smallest band wire tothe breaking strain on the heaviest wire used. By meansof this adjustment the exact tension found suitable can beestablished at any time. The tension remains constant anduniform throughout the banding operation without theslightest injury to the band wire or the generation of anyheat. Each pound of pressure applied at the brake drum is mul-tiplied by means of gearing to 3 lb. at the band-wire drum, which is tapered to compensate for the tendency of thewire to crowd up against the flange. On account of thisgear reduction, a comparatively small braking effect pro-duces a very great tension on the band wire, and anychange in tension
