In Greek mythology ,Pandora was the first woman on earth. Zeus, the king of gods, sent her as a wife to Prometheus' brother, Epimetheus, with a box that he forbade her to open. She disobeyed and, when she opened it ,all the evils afflicting humankind flew out .Hope alone remained inside, as is shown in this 1917 illustration.
