. Baltimore and Ohio employees magazine . It is the only machine of its kindin the country today, the idea being originatedby W. S. Eyerly, foreman of No. 2 MachineShop, who also supervised the construction ofthe machine. Going through most railroad shops one willnotice that the mud plugs for the locomotivesare turned up on a lathe, and on inquiring aboutthem, will be informed that when an output ofone hundred plugs per day is obtained it isconsidered a good days work. But the pictureof plugs on this page shows one hours output ofthe machine constructed at this shop. Thisrate of output is kept up for nine hours, makinga total of five hundred and forty mud plugs perday. This means an increase of five hundredper cent, over the old method, not taking intoconsideration a saving of nearly six hundredper cent, in cost of production, which means alarge sum of money when the number of mudplugs used per month by a large railroad istaken into consideration. An inspection of this machine reveals thatit was originally a Lodge and Shipley. HUGH DEITZ AND RAY ENGLE 18-inch lathe. The starting and stopping ofthe machine, and also the clamping of the plug,is done by air, the last named operation being ONE HOURS OUTPUT OF THE NEW MUD PLUG MACHINE THE BALTIMORE AND OHIO EMPLOYES MAGAZINE 73
