Smeaton's Tower as seen from the battlements of the Royal Citadel, Plymouth


The third Eddystone lighthouse was built by Smeaton in 1759 using interlocking stones. These were placed in position on the Hoe before being shipped out to the Eddystone Rocks from Millbay Harbour. It stood for over 120 years and was finally removed in 1882 because of a fault in the rocks below. Each stone was carefully removed and then re-assembled on The Hoe to replace an old navigation beacon.
