On the paternal side he is of Englishdescent, his father, John J. Steen, having beenborn in Nottingham, England, whence he im-migrated to the United States, locating firstm Brookbn, N. Y., then in Baltimore, Aid.,and still later in Brookfield, Va. It was inthe latter city that his marriage occurred, unit-ing him with Martha Brooks, who was a na-tive of the Old Dominion.
