Adolph Knopf (1882-1966), US geologist. Knopf studied at the University of California, Berkeley, and obtained his doctorate in 1909 while working for the United States Geological Survey in Alaska. He worked at Yale University from 1920, retiring in 1951. His work was primarily in petrology and mineralogy, investigating mineral deposits. He also worked on determining the age of the Earth (geochronology). Elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1931, his awards included the Penrose Medal (1966) of the Geological Society of America. This photograph dates from the period 1905 to 1945.
