Starting the wood lot.—The w^ood lot may be started,in the case of most trees, either by planting the seed, orby setting out young trees. A common method of startinga grove of hardy catalpa, for example, is to prepare theseed bed as if for corn. Catalpa seed is then planted, andthe field cultivated for several years. The growth of the tree is not retarded by thisprocess. A seed bed for trees can easily be started, and the treestransplanted to the desired positions when the seedlings arefrom one to three years old.
