Indian Prince Shantanu meets the Goddess Ganga

According to Indian mythology, Prince Shantanu of Hastinapur was out hunting and reached the River Ganga, where he saw a beautiful woman (pictured here). He fell in love and asked her to marry him. She agreed but on the condition that he never question what she did. He agreed but after she drowned each of the seven children born to them he asked why when the eighth was born. Ganga, who was the River Ganga goddess, said if he had waited until she drowned the eighth, she would have broken the curse and she could have lived with him forever but as he had not kept his part of the agreement she had to leave to her ethereal home.
