Hammershus Fort. The Storage House. Bornholm, Denmark.

Hammershus Fort. The Storage House. Bornholm, Denmark. Hammershus is a medieval fort built 1255 by archbishop Jacob Erlandsen and became an importen part of the power game between the church and the royal power. In 1522 Hammershus was taken over by force by the German Hanseatic Lübeck for the next some 50 years. After the Danish-Swedish war. the Swede took over Hammershus in 1658 but as a consequence of a local uprising against the Swedes, the fort again came in Danish posestion. The fort had by then lost its military imporatnce and became a state prison, where several important people, which various kings wanted to get rid of, was imprisoned. In 1743 the fort was cleared out and its remains used as a stone quarry. In 1822 the fort became listed as a national heritage. Hammershus covers an area of M2 and is situated on a 74 meter high rock and directly out to the sea. With the vertical cliffs down to the shore it must have been a not very encouraging sight for an attacking fleet wanting to take it over. Photo shows (left side) the Magasinbygningen (the Storage house), which contained all the treasures and the items the people of Bornholm paid as tax. Payment was in kind. A statement from 1526 list the following paid by the people of Bornholm: 1700 barrels of grain, 180 barrels butter, 11 oxen, 37 cows, 56 young catle, 37 pigs, 360 geese, 2670 hens, 3390 wagon loads of firewood, 360 German (Lübeck) Mark.
