Children of Willard ayid Hannah (Elhs) Converse: Stillman Amos Converse, liorn in Marlborough, N. H., 24 Jan. 1S32; rereivcd a goodromnion-school education, and engaged in farming, first as an employC-, and lateras a farm owner. In 1861, he enlisted as a private in Co. I, 9th regiment Iowa Vol-unteers, for three yeirs service in the Civil War. He participated in many engage-ments, among which were the Battle of Pea Ridge and the siege of Vicksburg, where22 May 1863, his regiment led the charge on the enemys breastworks. During. Recoverin;; sufficiently, he re-enlisted for anotherperiod of thiee years, and started out with Shermans army in its march to the sea;but, at the battle of Atlanta, w-hile on duty in the advance picket line, he was shotdown near Joiiesboro, and was buried with others in an unknown grave.
