This important kind offuel is derived from mines at a shortdistance from the town. The popula-tion, in 1810, was 800 ; in 1820, 2,479;in 1830, 2,964; in 1840, 4,247; and in1850, about 7,000. Steubenville contains five publicschools and four select ones, besidesa male and a female seminary. The for-mer is named Grove academy, and is aflourishing institution, containing abouteighty pupils. The latter, situated onthe bank of the Ohio, was commenced in1829, at an expense of nearly S40,000,has ten or twelve teachers, and aboutone hundred and fifty pupils. A broad lawn, shadedwith trees, slopes toward the river. Portsmouth, on the right bank of theOhio river, at the mouth of the Scioto,one hundred and five miles from Cin-cinnati, is at the head of the Ohio canal,and contains a population of about 5,000inhabitants. The public buildings arethe courthouse, a bank, and four church-es. Iron ore is found in the upper partsof Scioto county, and in Lawrencecountry, and there are several mills andmanufactories. Water, for the supply of|the town, is raised from theriver by depart daily for Wheel-ing, Pittsburg, &c., and stage-coachesgo daily to Columbus. Portsmouth isthe capital of Scioto county.
