The dotted bars represent the present authors attempts to correct for the underrepre-sentation of young individuals in the profiles of the north Chinese species. In general, the?death (= dx) profiles in this Figure contrast with those in Figures 3 and 4 in lacking a clearsecond peak among older adults. This may be due to chance, or it may indicate tha^t such apeak is not a necessary- feature of attritional mortahr^- in large mammals. 62 ANNALS OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN MUSEUM. Age profiles resulting from predation by lions on Burchells zebra and Capebuffalo (Serengeti Plain) (Schaller 1972); from unrestrained, non-selective shooting ofchamois in the Alps (Kurten 1953 using data from Bourhere 1951); and from prehistoricAmerican Indian hunting of pronghorn antelope (Eden-Farson site, Wyoming) (Nimmo1971). The numbers of very young zebra and buffalo killed by lions cannot be accuratelyestimated, but very young individuals would certainly dominate the kill profiles ifaccurate counts could be made. The hunters who shot the chamois essentially ignoredvery young individuals because they do not make good trophies. Only in the pronghornprofile are very young animals probably represented in more or less their proper (true) zebra data have been reorganized from the original presentation, with individ-uals in what were sometimes broader age classes distributed
