1908 image taken in Orkney, Scotland - Maeshowe or Maes Howe chambered burial cairn, Orkney, Scotland as it was. Known in Old Norse: as Orkhaugr, this Neolithic chambered cairn and passage grave gives its name to other similar types of burial chamber only found in the Orkney. This one is to be found on Mainland Orkney, Scotland. It was probably built around 2800 BC. It is aligned so that the rear wall of its central chamber is illuminated on the winter solstice.
