View towards the village of Uçhisar in Cappadocia, Turkey. The landscape in Cappadocia is formed from compacted volcanic ash called "tuff" that smothered the land some 30 million years ago. Natural forces have since sculpted a wonderland of ridges, canyons and bizarre phallic protrusions known as fairy chimneys. People have been dugging caves for houses in the soft stone since prehistoric times, and also fortresses, such as the one in Uçhisar.
