FOREST PROTECTION Polyporus nigricans attacks beech, birch and poplarin the New England States causing standingtimber to rot. (Agric. Year Book 1900, p. 207;Bulletin Bureau Plant Industry No. 149, p. 42). Polyporus sulfureus causes the brown rot of manyconifers, also of oak, walnut and cherry. ( Plant Industry No. 149, page 37; Book 1900, p. 207). Polyporus igniarius occurs everywhere on beech andoak. (Agric. Year Book 1900, p. 207; BulletinBureau Plant Industry, No. 149, pp. 25 to 37). Polyporus libocedris causes the peckiness of baldcypress and the pin rot of incense cedar. Thepecks consist of disconnected holes (or pockets)about 4 long ending abruptly and partiallyfilled with brown powder. Found in trees over100 years old. Reference: Contr.
