Mountain scenery on the Olperer Runde Tour and Peter Habeler Weg in the Zillertal Alps seen here at the Geraer Hut
Mountain scenery on the Olperer Runde Tour and Peter Habeler Weg, a multi-day long distance walk in the Zillertal Alps near to the resort town of Mayrhofen seen here at Geraer Hut mountain refuge named after the northeast German town of Gera. What is interesting here is that during WWII the hut and environs was a base to mine molybdenum an essential element for the composition of hardened steels such as ball bearings. Whilst the US airforce tried to bomb the mine in 1944, it was a huge avalanche that brought the mines production to an end.
