Hisgrandfather Calvinhad six children, andhis grandfather Up-dike ten Calvins fatherand mother were theoldest out of eachfamily. His fatherdied at seventy-sevenyears, and his motherat eighty-five years,Bucks county, Penn-sylvania, being theseat of their death. Susan Ann was his mothers givenname. Richard Calvin had four brothers and six sisters—-Jonathan, Katie, Grace, Clara See, Fannie, Rebecca,Samuel, Luther, Susan, William. Nearly all the familyare dead, while those remaining are scattered throughoutthe land. Richard was born at Erwinna, a noted post. office near Doylestown, the county seat. At the close ofthe War of 1812, his father bought a farm on the Dela-ware, Settled, raised a large family, and though notwealthy, was a powerful factor in all enterprises of privateand public importance. He served two terms in the leg-islature about 1822. It was at the old homestead that Richard received hiseducation. As wasthe fashion then, heattended school dur-ing the w^inter monthsonly. Mathematicswas his favorite study,and from his naturaltalents more thananything else, was en-abled in after yearsto compute and draftfor public twenty-two yearsof age he left home,went between Bristoland Easton andthere, in partnershipwith Isaac Otis, en-gaged in building acanal from Bristol toi\ * Easton.
