Glacial retreat. Image 3 of 3. Grinnell Glacier, Glacier National Park, Montana, USA, in 2006. Grinnell Glacier is located in the Lewis mountain range in the Rocky Mountains of northern Montana. The glacier, as viewed from the summit of Mount Gould, covers an area from centre left to the lower left of the image. Lake Grinnell (lower right) contains a few floating ice chunks that have broken from the glacier. Glaciers are large, slow-moving expanses of ice, formed from compacted layers of snow. They are sensitive to climate change and in recent years most have retreated dramatically. See images E235/375 and E235/376 for images of the same glacier as seen in 1938 and 1981.
