In September 1914, the Germans were within thirty kilometers of Paris. During this time windows were reinforced with lattices of masking tape. To protect shoppers during a potential German air raid, shopkeepers applied a sticky tape to display windows to prevent the glass from shattering dangerously in all directions, so Parisian shopfronts competed for the most artistic use of anti-bombardment tape in their window designs. Paris, where even during wartime, elegance is a priority.
