In the memorable actionof the 8th January, the chief effort of the enemy was directedagainst them, but their valor, and that of the brav3 men whosupported them (General Coffees brigade on the left and a partof the Kentucky troops on the right), soon made it clear that arampart of high-minded men is a better defence than the mostregular fortification. General Adair, who, owing to the indisposition of GeneralThomas, brought up the Kentucky militia, has shown that troopswill always be valiant when their leaders are so. No men everdisplayed a more gallant spirit than these did under that mostvaluable officer. His country
