While we have had a 6-inch fall of snow within a few days, winter lacks the snap of a year ago and the presence of numbers of bluebirds, phcebes and other spring birds indicates that the backbone of winter is broken. W. N. C. ST. LOUIS. The Market. All last week the wholesale market was in a splendid condition, as all seemed to have an exceptionally good supply daily. The demand was quite large and fancy stock cleaned up. The retailers say that business has been ex- ceptionally good and they expected, February 12, to have a busy St. Valen- tine's day. Roses showed an increase in supply and last week some large shipments of Premier, Columbia, Russell and Ophelia came to this market, with prices still up on prime stock. Carnations had a heavy demand all week, while the supply was about equal to it. The price went up the latter part of the week and $10 and $12 per hundred was asked for fancy stock. Splits were holding at $8. All Enchantress varieties were in fine qual- ity and were in demand. Nebraska had the call in reds and C. W. Ward, a good keeper, in dark pinks. The continuous dark weather last week will shorten up the violet crop, wfliich was expected to be large with clear weather. The price was up to $2 and '$3 per hundred.
