Tunnelling machine. Engraving of a pneumatic boring machine being used to construct a tunnel during the 19th century. The machine used water compressors to supply the machine with pressurised air. Engraving of the machine used during 1869 to bore the Mont Cenis railway tunnel between France and Italy. Work on the kilometre tunnel was begun in 1857. The introduction of the newly-invented power drills during its construction increased the drilling rate by 300%. The tunnel was completed in 1871.
