When in1907 the Worlds Student Christian Federa-tion held its biennial conference in Tokyo,bringing together prominent Christian leadersfrom almost every country in the world, MissKawai was one of the speakers who left thedeepest impression on the conference. Twoyears later she was asked to spend the greaterpart of a year travelling among the YoungWomens Christian Associations of Americaand Great Britain, promoting interest in thewomen of the Orient. During this time sheattended several summer conferences of the. ?f. o > U X Womans Life in Modern Japan 207 Young Womens Christian Associatioii, teach-ing a mission study class of two hundredyoung women at one of them, and visited alarge number of cities and colleges. Every-where she made friends not only for herselfbut for the women she represented. To hun-dreds of young women she was a revelationof the possibilities of Japanese womanhoodwhich they can never forget. Miss Kawai waschairman of the missionary section of the con-ference of the Worlds Young Womens Chris-tian Association held in Berlin in 1910 andgave one of the addresses of the created as great an impression in Germanyas in Great Britain and America. She waslike the freshness of a new revelation fromGod, a German woman student declared. Upon her return to Japan Miss Kawai waschosen as the chairman of the Womans Sub-committee of the Worlds Student ChristianFederation.
