Steam and gas will be extensively used in some ofthe original schemes for night illumination of thePanama-Pacific International Exposition. It is be-lieved that some of the most spectacular effects willbe gained where these are combined. This will be particularly noticeable in the Courtof Abundance in which the architect has taken for histheme the creation and development of the earth andhas presented a symbolic idea of the history of manfrom the prehistoric da) to the present. The rise ofman and the development of the earth has been treatedby a series of graduated scales; the lowest form, or the. Cascades of the Court of Abundance. unicellular life being presented on the ground level andthe various stages of advance noted on ascendingplanes. The court will be illuminated almost exclusivelyby means of high pressure gas. Urns will be placedabout the court and on the borders of a still lagoon inthe center, from which twisted gas flames ten to fif-teen feet in height will rise. Great sheets of flame will lick the fire-proof sidesof the court and rise along the facades and up thescores of columns supporting huge carved figures ofprehistoric men. A haze will hang over the entire court created bysteam forced through perforated pipes laid along theground level. The cloudy vapor and the reddish-yellow flames will produce an effect of mystery whichthe entire architectural scheme will carry out. It is the intention of the designer to have gas re-leased under pressure just beneath the surface of thewater in the lagoon which will be ignited upon str
