During the day the Spanishkept up a desultory firing, chiefly by sharp-shooters, endeavoring to pick off men whoexposed themselves near the trench. Thisfiring was responded to by the Pennsylvaniasharpshooters stationed at the dirt loopholesof the breastworks. Occasionally the Spaniards would direct afew shots down the road leading from CampDewey to the breastworks, but no injurieshave been reported as resulting from this 190 THE CHICAGO RECORDS WAR STORIES. Late in the afternoonI visited the breastworks and found thePennsylvania and Utah men busily workingon shelters to protect them from the rain,and several sharpshooters were lying againstthe breastworks occasionally responding tothe sharp snap of the Spanish Mausers. Atthat time the earth had been thrown up toa height of six feet in some places and near-ly seven in others. A man was thereby per-mitted to stand at his full height when nearthe breastworks. The rain was falling insudden, drenching showers and pools ofmuddy water were standing in the depres-sions near the embankment. Just midwaybetween the road and the beach is the oldCapuchin monastery, which has been de-serted since the insurgent and Spanish hos-tilities have been on.
