This is the night sky above the European Southern Observatory (ESO) facilities at Cerro Paranal, Chile. Bands of dust and glowing nebulae are seen along the band of billions of stars that is our Milky Way galaxy seen from the inside. The Milky Way is arching from the Paranal peak (left) where the VLT (Very Large Telescope) is housed, to the adjacent peak (right) with the VISTA (Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy) building. Also on the Paranal peak is the VST (VLT Survey Telescope). This view looks towards the Pacific Ocean, some 12 kilometres away, normally cloud-covered but clear :
