Cancun coast, satellite image. North is at top. Vegetation is red, water is blue, and clouds are white. Known for its beaches and resort hotels, Cancun lies at the tip of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. A large town (blue/grey) is on the coast just below centre. Inland from the coast is a sparsely populated tropical scrub forest that shelters the ruins of ancient Mayan cities. The area shown in this image is around 60 kilometres wide. The image data includes infrared wavelengths, and was obtained on 28 September 2000, using the ASTER sensor on the Terra satellite.
