Coast Guardsman Receives Navy Cross. Captain James A. Hirshfield, Coast Guard, is shown wearing the Navy Cross he received in ceremonies in the office of Vice Admiral Russell R. Waesche, Coast Guard Commandant. As skipper of the Coast Guard Cutter Campbell, Captain Hirshfield blew the sixth sub he contacted in 12 hours to the surface with depth charges and sank it by ramming and gunfire. Though wounded by flying splinters, he never left his post. His home is in Newton, Mass. He held the rank of Commander at the time of the presentation.
