Boy with flat head syndrome. Mother with her 9-month-old son who is wearing a helmet to correct deformational plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome). In this case the condition was acquired through lying on one side following post-natal surgery. The helmet, also called a head orthesis, is made specifically for each patient. It works by selecively hindering growth of the skull in the first year, allowing other areas to grow out to fit the natural profile.
