The Philippines. Ferdinand and Imelda (shoes) Marcos. His presidency will always be remembered as a period of shame. When he took over the country it owed nil and when he left it it owed the rest of the world 26 billions of dollars, He stuffed boxes full of dollar bills in as he left Malacanang Palace. A brilliant lawyer, he defended himself against a murder charge before taking office. He built a network of roads and bridges started his time in office with a land reform project. The late 1960s and early 1970s saw economic development that was second in Asia, only to Jappan. He was elected a 2nd time but by this time the country was mired in debt, when it came to a 3rd time he declared martial law on ,1972, under threats of increased political instability and resurgent Communist and Muslim insurgencies. He ruled the country by decree. A curfew was imposed, congress suspended and he ruled by assassination of Benigno Aquino, Jr.(Aug 1983) led to the People Power Revolution of 1986 that overthrew authoritarian rule. Political upheavals and corruption scandals alternated with the peaceful transition of power during the period that followed the restoration of democracy. He died in exile in Hawaii in 1995. (?) Estrada (a former film star) became the second Filipino Pres. to be Impeached & imprisoned in 2001. Imelda Marcos still lives, she is a senator in the Philippines.
