Identification of the chronicler is uncertain and disputed. Most commonly believed to be Gomes Eanes de Zurara (Figueiredo 1910; Markl, 1988; MNAA), although a recent controversial book (Almeida and Albuquerque, 2000) disputes the Zurara identification, dates the panels 1445 and identifies this figure instead as his predecessor Fernão Lopes.
