A statue of a Great War trooper and his horse commemorating the Romsey Remount Depot and its role in the First World War

This statue was sculpted by Hampshire artist Amy Goodman and is made of bronze resin. The statue commemorates the Romsey Remount Depot that stood on Pauncefoot Hill, to the south of the town. It provided horses and mules for the army during the First World War and could house 5,000 animals and 2,000 men. Some of the horse came from the UK and Ireland, but the majority came from the USA and South America (principally Argentina) they arrived by sea at Plymouth and were shipped to Romsey by train where they underwent training for their military role before being shipped to France via Southampton. After the war the remount depot was demolished and the rubble used for hard standing for the Memorial Park where the statue now stands. The statue was unveiled by Princess Anne, The Princess Royal in 2015.
