German War Cemetery Cannock Chase Staffordshire


The German Military Cemetery in Staffordshire, holds the remains of 4940 Germen war dead. 2143 from World war I and 2797 from world war II. Most of those at rest, died in prisoner of war camps in the Others were airmen from crashed or shot down airships or aircraft . There are also at rest, sailors who died at sea and whose bodies were washed up on beaches. An agreement for a cemetery was made in 1959 between the governments of the United Kingdom and the Federal Republic of Germany. The inauguration and dedication was in June 1967. The Cemetery was designed and built by the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgraberfursorge. Most of the German war dead were transferred here from other cemeteries in the United Kingdom. The cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
