In clearweather it is probable that the birds pass directly fromabove the German Ocean into the interior of Berwickshire, and there descend from their lofty flight. In apparentsupport of the above views with regard to the routes bywhich birds on migration enter the county, it may bementioned that the recorded dates of the first arrivals inBerwickshire of some of the typical migrants as given inthe following tables have been compared with the corre-sponding dates of their first appearances at the Fame Islandsand the Isle of May, and it has been found that in someyears the birds were observed in Berwickshire before theywere noticed at either of these stations, while in other yearsthey were seen at the Fame Islands or the Isle of Maybefore they were noticed in this OENITHOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS, 329 Table of Oknithological Obseevations made in Berwick-shire from 1799 until 1887, including the earliest, latest, and average dates of the arrival and departureof migratory birds. ^ TRUE MIGRANTS.
