The 'Roof of the World'. Colour-enhanced satellite view of part of Nepal and the Himalayan mountain range. The Himalayas are seen in the top half of the image. At top right, casting a large shadow at the head of a complex valley, is Mount Everest; at 8848 metres this is the highest mountain in the World. The city of Khatmandu is in the pale brown patch of land just up from centre left. The bottom of the frame shows part of the plains of northern India, crossed by innumerable tributaries of the Ganges. The darkest red colour, just above the plain, is the line of the Churia Ghati Hills. The data for this image were gathered by a Landsat satellite.
