Close to this—and overhanging what was till recently a littlehollow lane—stands the grey little Temple of Fortuna, commonlycalled Fortuna Virilis, built originally by Seivius Tullius, butrebuilt during the republic; and if the existing structure is reallyrepublican, it is the most perfect pre-Augustan temple remainingin Rome. It stands on a stylobate of travertine, surrounded byIonic pilasters in the style of construction which Vitruvius stigma-tises under the name of pseudo-peripteral, but with a pro-styleportico with engaged columns along the sides, 28 feet high, coatedonce with hard stucco, and supporting a fragmentary entablatureadorned w
