The village of Tamugimaru was once on the road used for pilgrimages from the inland area to the religious sites of the Shonai the snowfall is deep and land for building is scarce, a distinct style of architecture to suit these conditions emerged. Rare for traditional Japanese architecture, a three-storied building called kabuto-zukuri, developed. It features a first floor used as a family living space, the second floor for servants and the third floor for raising silkworms and silk weaving. This type of dwelling aided the inhabitants to live comfortably in an otherwise difficult environment
