Refuse pellets in Power Plant. Technician digs a mound of RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) pellets, which will be incinerated to generate power. The interior of the Byker Reclamation Power Plant is seen, situated in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, and commissioned in 1979. The Power Plant mechanically sorts domestic rubbish, removes metals, dries the refuse and compresses it into these RDF pellets. Some 2000 tonnes of refuse are processed and burned per week, to generate Megawatts of electricity for the national grid. The station also heats boilers to provide heating to 1700 homes and municipal buildings on the Byker District Heating Network.
