The beautiful Morning Glory Pool is still a wonderful sight, but not at all what it originally presented.

The pool was named by the wife of Assistant Park Superintendent, Charles McGowan 1883. Mrs. E. N. McGowan called it "Convolutus", the Latin name for the morning glory flower, which the spring resembles. By 1889, the name Morning Glory Pool had become common usage in the park Unfortunately, objects thrown into the pool by visitors, have almost clogged its deep plumbing and block the supply of hot water from the depth. The once deep indigo color of the bowl has shifted to green and the once narrow yellow ring around the rim has broadened considerably. Several attempts of the National Park Service to re-enlarge the vent failed. Now a tribute to the mindless tourists that created a green swamp from a priceless gem.
