Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus). This carnivorous predator reaches lengths of over six metres. It inhabits tropical and subtropical areas of Africa, near swamps, lakes and rivers, feeding on large animals such as antelope, as well as smaller prey such as water birds and small mammals. This crocodile is part of the Pierrelatte crocodile farm (La Ferme aux Crocodiles) in southern France. Founded in 1994, this tourist attraction and research centre centres on a large tropical greenhouse housing a collection of plants, birds, giant tortoises, and over 400 crocodiles. Photographed in 2011.
