Such a district needs a centre where farmproduce can be marketed and where the farmers canpurchase commodities. This market town will ariseat the point most conveniently accessible for the wholedistrict. In the case of Kinross-shire, the most convenient POPULATION COMMUNICATIONS 133 situation would naturally be near the centre of the basin,where, in fact, we do find the town of Kinross. Thetown appears to owe its size and importance to threechief factors : (i) it is the natural centre and, therefore,the market town of the whole shire ; (2) it is on the GreatNorth Road, roughly about half-way between Edinburghand Perth, and was an important stopping-place in theold coaching days ; (3) it is on the shore of Loch Levenand has become a centre for skaters and curlers in thewinter and for anglers in the fishing season.
