The island lias become a vice-consulateof Canton ; a British consul lives there, and acustom-house has been built. But as the cityKiungchow is situated a mile up the river,the custom-house was erected at Hoihow, onthe coast. The anchorage , and theport itself is considered the most unsuitableone that could be selected. The other portsare Wanchow, on the coast between Foochowand Nmgpo; Woohoo, on the river Yang-tse,between Nanking and Kiukiang; and Ichang,. CHINESE FLOWER BOAT. on the Upper Yang-tse, 360 miles fartherinto the interior of China than the presentadvanced post of foreign commerce, these ports, which will be endowedwith consular and custom-house establish-ments, there are to be six landing-placeson that great river, where steamers will be CHINA. Ill permitted to touch and take in or land mer-chandise or passengers. The chief interestattaches to the port of Ichang, placed high Dpon the great river of China 1,000 miles fromthe sea. It is practically the highest point towhich steamers can hope to ascend the Yang-tse-kiang, for, although there is an immensevolume of water in the river for many hun-dreds of miles above Ichang, the river rlowsthrough a series of formidable rapids, whichwill probably do more than even the exclusivepolicy of the Chinese Government to keep for-eign steam enterprise out of the promisingregion of Szechueu.
