On May 9, 1898, the Marblehead Historical Society was organized, itsmembers being the trustees past and present of Abbot Public Library. Its firstcollection was placed in the library. In August, 1899, its first loan exhibitionwas held, and a wealth of articles of rare historic value was brought out fromthe homes of the town, many of them brought from foreign ports, by the mer-chant men of the town, and held as treasures by their descendants.
