Cotham landscape marble. Polished slab of marly limestone from Triassic (around 250-200 million years ago) beds. Known as Cotham landscape marble (but not a marble in the geologic sense) this stone has been valued and used since ancient times for the attractive tree-like scenery seen in polished slabs. These forms are actually thought to be the remains or traces left by stromatolithic algae living on the shallow sea bottom at the time of deposition of the sediments. This slab was found at Cotham, Gloucestershire, UK, and measures 120 mm across.
