It received its modern name after the founding of Sevastopol. The ancient seafarers, however, have known it for the past 25 centuries. Its other names in the past are Ktenus / Ktenunt, Korsun Sivash, Kalamita-estuary, Bolshaya, Big road, Sevastopol road, Main road, Chersonesos estuary, Akhtiarskaya, Inkerman. All historical names of the bay are associated either with the size of the bay, or with the names of settlements on its shores.
