Heart. Historical artwork of a healthy human heart. The superior vena cava (not seen), one of the two main veins, enters the heart at upper centre. The coronary arteries (centre left & right), which supply blood to the heart muscle, branch off from the aorta (upper centre). This is the large artery that carries blood to the body. The pulmonary blood vessels (upper left) transport blood to and from the lungs. This illustration is by the Italian artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519).
