DENNIS, Dr. Van Dycks death is announced by-cable. His name occupies a distinguishedplace in the history of modern missions. Hisservices to Syria, and to the far wider circleof Arabic speaking races, in the departmentof biblical translation and educational litera-ture place him in the front rank of the mis-sionary benefactors of the race. He wasborn August 13, 1818, at Kinderhook, NewYork, of Dutch parentage. His early educa-tion was obtained at the Kinderhook Academy,and his professional studies were completed atthe Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia,from which he obtained his medical was subsequently ordained to the ministryin Syria, in 1846, and received later in lifethe degrees of Doctor of Divinity and Doctor ofLaws, the latter from the University ofEdinburgh.
