Hair stubble. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the cut end of a shaven hair (blue) on skin from the face. The hair emerges from a structure in the skin called a hair follicle. The surrounding area shows dead cells on the surface of the skin. The outer layer of cells, the stratum corneum, is made up of dead cells that are constantly shed and replaced by new cells from the epidermis below. Magnification: x120 when printed 10cm wide.
